She said ‘it’s not you, it’s me’, but we can’t help thinking about all the wax shavings we left on the bench or those times we didn’t tell her about the clean-up moustache she had when she left the studio…
When CARVE started two and a half years ago, Kate and Katie wanted to take the art of wax jewellery making into cool spaces across Scotland. It was a side project - both still had their own businesses. As CARVE has grown, Kate and Katie’s businesses have too, and at the beginning of this year Katie’s own practice became so amazingly excellent that she decided she couldn’t give CARVE the attention we one hundred percent demand.
I mean, we’re gutted. She’s left. But we’re pretty pleased at how well she’s doing - and we wanted to give her a proper send off. So here, ‘interviewed’ by Jenni, are Katie’s official farewell words.
Jenni Colquhoun: What made you decide to ditch us… I mean, take a step back?
Katie Lees: It's a brilliant position to be in, but with a constantly-growing workload in my jewellery business, it was all becoming a little too taxing on time. My own business is really progressing, and it requires more of my brain! As most sole traders will know, work/life balance is a juggling act, and having two businesses to run was proving too hard to give both the attention they deserved. It's a sad step back, but I know CARVE is in safe hands with Kate.
JC: Aw, that’s pretty nice actually. So before the waterworks start, tell us your most hilarious CARVE story?
KL: You mean other than the time we had a 'serial participant' who was also a serial genital carver? 😜 (JC - she has to bring that up every time. Not all my CARVEs look like genitals. And anyway, that’s why you guys are the jewellers and not me... )
KL: We've had so many LOLs but I think BOTH times we walked off of trains (one in Inverness station and one after an Edinburgh CARVE) SANS our trolley, which was 'safely' stowed away in the luggage rack, were both terrifying and hilarious.
JC: Is there anyone you’d like to give a particular shout-out to from your amazing CARVE times?
KL: Obviously Kate, without her there would have been no CARVE. She was the brains and I was the hands on 'talent'. No matter how busy or stressful times got, hosting a CARVE class together was like a calm oasis in a hectic life.
Jenni, big holler to you for being said serial-genital-CARVEr 😜 and for bringing the bants to our meetings, and beautiful illustrations and words into our lives.
And also, to my husband/doggy who had to share me with CARVE! 😊
JC: Where can we find you now? Any juicy plans for the future you can tell us?
KL: Oft, secrets secrets! I’ve got LOTS of new work in the pipeline. Some collaborations and events, celebrations, some new bling, but you'll still find me doing my best chimney sweep impression at my bench.
CARVE you have been a hoot, onwards and upwards for everyone.
From Katie - over and out 😃 X
Katie will be seriously missed at CARVE classes and meetings. But her studio is too close to doughnuts, so she isn't rid of us forever.
Make sure you’re following Katie over on Instagram to see her latest updates (seriously, why are you not already, it’s drool-worthy over there), and while you’re there, make sure you’re following CARVE, too.
